We see it as this passive thing that has no impact on the lives of real people while ignoring the fact that the "actors" in those videos are in fact real people, and that the mass consumption of this product has and will continue to influence culture and the respective attitudes towards women of the men (and women) who watch it. The problem we have is that people do not see pornography as a product. The major tube sites are mostly all owned by a larger parent company called Mindgeek which was caught in several scandals in the past few years. Its a multi-billion dollar global industry that profits off the exploitation of young, often vulnerable women. Some people have great experiences and love what they do, but just like any other kind of acting, there are probably a lot of people who got where they are by being abused and taken advantage of. People get taken advantage of all the time.

After that, the studio continues to use that scene to gaslight them into doing more, since "there's no way they can do any other work now" and "no modeling agency would pick them up now." All in all, some fucked up stuff.Īt the end of the day, it's another part of the acting industry. Of course these girls can't afford that, so they do the scene. If the girls tried to back out, management would berate them, gaslight them, and threaten them by saying they'd have to reimburse the studio for the hotel, plane ticket, and everything else if they backed out. The girls agree, they get flown out to LA, stay in a super swanky hotel, all their expenses are covered, and then they show up to the studio where they're told that they're going to be in a hardcore scene. They'd say that there "might be some light nudity" but it'd all be tasteful, of course. From what I remember, a studio would find young, attractive girls and offer them modeling gigs in LA. There was also a huge scandal I remember hearing about a few years ago, but I'm struggling to remember all the details. Not in terms of, like, casting a 20 year old in something that'll be billed as "teen." More "this girl is actually 16, but we're just going to pretend she was born two years earlier." Also considering how common abuse is in any other acting industry, I wouldn't be surprised if abuse stats weren't similar in porn. There've been a lot of scandals throughout the years of the porn industry fudging the numbers when it comes to girls' age. The risk sex workers are put in, the abuse and exploitation they face on the daily, is leagues beyond dealing with entitled Karens at Target. People who say things like “all labour is exploitation so being a sex worker is the same as working retail” need to get their head out of their ass and stop whining about their corporate store jobs and thinking they’re akin to sex workers. I support the right of women to choose to be sex workers, I think they deserve to be respected in every way, but I would never recommend it to anyone and if anyone asked about my experience I would tell them I got lucky that I was only financially scammed and exploited by people and not physically abused like so many others I know. There a few rare people who manage to survive the industry just fine and do it long term by their own decision, but it can’t be ignored that the majority of people in the field are doing it simply to make big money quickly and many of them leave the industry scarred or at the very least, disillusioned to it. You are constantly catering to men to your own detriment physically, mentally, and emotionally. As a former sex worker, I think it is feminist that we have the choice and I support that but the industry itself is very anti-feminist at its core.
